Moon Teas vs. Sun Teas: Cooling and Warming Wisdom for Summer Balance.

Summer may seem like one long stretch of heat, but if you’ve been paying attention lately, you’ve probably noticed the extremes — blistering sun one day, a sudden cold wind or damp chill the next. This kind of fluctuation isn’t just confusing for your wardrobe… it can throw your whole system off balance!

In Ayurveda, summer is primarily ruled by the fiery Pitta dosha, but those cooler, moody summer shifts can awaken Vata & Kapha tendencies too. That’s why HOW you hydrate — and what you steep into your daily tea — can make a big difference in staying balanced, grounded, and energized all season long.

What’s the Difference Between Sun Teas and Moon Teas?

Both sun and moon teas are water infusions, but their energetic qualities differ depending on how they’re prepared:

🌞 Sun Teas are steeped under direct sunlight (or with gently boiled water), slowly absorbing solar energy over several hours. This method naturally enhances the warming, stimulating qualities of the herbs. These teas are ideal for cooler summer days, foggy mornings, or when you’re feeling sluggish or a bit mentally cloudy.

🌙 Moon Teas, on the other hand, are made by steeping herbs overnight, usually in moonlight or just at room temperature. This slow, cool infusion brings out the softer, more cooling aspects of the herbs. They’re especially helpful during heatwaves, when tempers run short and digestion runs hot.

Supporting Your Body with Intuitive Sips

The beauty of working with sun and moon teas is that they let you adapt to your body’s needs — and the day’s energy — in a really gentle, intuitive way.

On days when you feel overheated, irritable, or have skin flares, a moon tea with herbs like rose, hibiscus, or mint can be wonderfully soothing.

When the breeze picks up or your circulation feels a little sluggish, a sun tea with warming spices like cinnamon, cardamom, or even a whisper of ginger can help rekindle your inner fire without overheating you.

Of course, the real magic happens when these herbs are paired and prepared with intention, which is exactly what I do in my Dosha balancing tea blends!
